Establishment of National Academy of Fine Arts


The Lalit Kala Akademi was inaugurated in New Delhi on August 5th, 1954, by the then Minister for Education, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. 

The first president of the Lalit Kala Akademi was the sculptor Devi Prasad Roy Chaudhary. Devi Prasad had equal rights in the field of art in painting and sculptor, but became more famous as a sculptor.

The National Lalit Kala Akademi has regional centers in Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, New Delhi and Bhubaneswar.

These regional centers are known as the National Center for the Arts. These centers have workshops for the development of the arts of painting, sculpture, and print making.

The National Academy of Fine Arts organizes the triennial international exhibition "Trinale India" in New Delhi every three years. The National Academy of Fine Arts honors eminent artists each year by choosing their fellows.

The National Lalit Kala Akademi also publishes half-yearly art magazines in English called "Fine Arts Contemporary" and "Fine Arts Ancient". A half-yearly art magazine called "Contemporary Art" is published in Hindi.

The current president of the National Academy of Fine Arts is the noted craftsman Shri Uttam Pacharne ji. He was appointed on 17 May 2018. It has been appointed for three years from the date of its holding.

At present, his tenure has been extended for 2 years.
