Artist K.Venkatappa:The artist who was called Mansoor of Bengal.



Known as Mansoor of Bengal Venkatappa was born (28 June 1886–26 May 1965) into a family of painters from Mysore.


K. Venkatappa was a painter, sculptor, and veena player. But he became known mainly as a painter.

His natural paintings and bird paintings resemble the Mughal painter named Mansoor, so art critics have called him Mansoor of Bengal.

K. Venkatappa's ancestors were court painters of the southern Hindu state of Vijaynagar.

He got his initial education in Mysore Arts College (Government College of Art and Craft Kolkata). And he got art education from Avanindra Nath Tagore. And this is where Nandlal Bose was his classmate.

In 1910 K. Venkatappa was involved in Lady Heringham's contingent in designing Ajanta's frescoes.

K. Venkatappa was famous as a miniature painter. He was also an expert in creating miniature paintings on ivory.

Venkatappa also depicted the person on ivory. In his person paintings, pictures of Avanindra Nath Tagore and Ramaswamy Mudaliar are important.

K. Venkatappa's paintings were often based on Puranas and ancient stories. Such as Ramayana, Mahabharata, Rama-Sita.

In 1913 Venkatappa accompanied Percy Brown and Gaganendra Nath Tagore on a trip to Uttarakhand and there he showed the natural beauty of the Himalayas through his visual images. He made most of the pictures sitting in his studio with memory and imagination.

K. Venkatappa was adept at depicting landscapes. Visual portraits of Ooty and Kodaikanal (in watercolor) of series Ooty and Kodaikanal made by him related to nature are important.

On 24 November 1967, the Government of Karnataka established "Venkatappa Art Gallery" in Bengaluru under his name. Here the embossed crafts in the watercolor and plaster of Venkatappa are displayed.
