History of National gallery of modern Art:NGMA


The idea of ​​establishing a National Gallery of Modern Art was first mooted in 1949.

 The National gallery of modern Art New Delhi was formally inaugurated on 29 March 1954 by Vice President Dr. Radhakrishnan in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the city's artists and art lovers.

This art gallery is located in Jaipur House, the residence of the then Maharaja of Jaipur.

Artworks of international artists including Nandlal Bose, Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Shergill, Yamini Rai, Devi Prasad Rai Chaudhary are stored here.

The National gallery of modern Art is located near India Gate in New Delhi.

Currently (29 March 2021 till this article is written) the Director General of the National gallery of modern Art is Advait Gadnayak ji.

The National gallery of modern Art has two branches. One is in Mumbai and the other is in Bangalore.

Mumbai Branch - Sir Kavasji Jehangir Public Hall, Mahatma Gandhi Marg.

Bengaluru Branch- Manikyvelu, 49 Palace Road Bengaluru.

This art gallery is a premier institution of its kind in India. It is run and operated as a subordinate office of the Department of Culture, Government of India.

Today, this museum is the most important collection of modern and contemporary art in the country.
