He was born on 10 March 1934 in Mumbai. Educated at J. J. School of Arts Mumbai. He made collage images with images of deities, printed images of gods and calendars etc. Before this, no artist had made such collage images.
One of his paintings 'Two Men in Benaras' was auctioned for around 2.5 million pounds (3.2 million dollars).
In 1986, when Khakhar first unveiled 'Two Men in Banaras' in Mumbai, he became the first Indian artist to openly tell about his sexual orientation through his work.

His painting 'Two Men in Banaras' depicts homosexuality. Bhupen Khakhar openly displays sexual feelings in his paintings.
Another famous painting of his was "You Can't Please All".
Bhupen Khakhar was also honored with the "Kalidas Samman" and the Padma Shri (1984).
He died on 8 August 2003.
